Why the West Doesn’t ‘Get’ Islam

Discussion, news coverage, and debate over recent events in Iran only reinforce my conviction that tensions between Islam and the West are not problems of traditional geography or politics (or even geo-politics) but of fundamental issues of thought, ideas and knowledge – that is, of epistemology. This Web site will detail my work – writing, teaching, and speaking – as I apply this idea to the history of science, to the so-called war on terrorism, and to the broader Western discourse of Islam.

The late French philosopher Michel Foucault is often associated with maddeningly elliptical writings, outrageous statements, and a colorful lifestyle. But he also gave us powerful tools in his techniques of "discourse analysis," tools that can be applied with great effect to the intersection of media and current affairs.

Reading the News with Michel Foucault," will attempt to do just that, with a special emphasis on topics that have interested me over the years, in particular the relationship between the notions of Islam and the West.
